When we paid $12,000 for a 4-day cruise, we were expecting premium service, space to breathe, and a little magic along the way. What we got instead was a sailing that tested our patience from day one. Long lines, packed venues, rushed service, and constant friction where relaxation should have been easy. This wasn’t about one bad moment. It was about how quickly a highly anticipated trip can unravel when the experience doesn’t match the promise.

This Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, NPR Music celebrates artists from all corners of Latinidad with an 'El Tiny' takeover.

Felix Contreras | October 11, 2024
Sheila E. is a portrait of motion.

Not just the movement of her body as one of the world’s most recognized drummers, but also as a versatile musician who glides easily from genre to genre with the ease of a master. For her time behind the Desk, she assembled a team of musicians to play tracks from her first ever salsa album Bailar.

From the first notes of “Rumba Percussion Jam,” Sheila E.’s bona-fides performing true rumbera (traditional Afro-Cuban drumming and singing) are on full display with her conga chops. The entire set is a reflection of her long standing ability to meld Afro-Caribbean, jazz and funk into a danceable celebration that caps off with shots of tequila for her final track “Playa Tequila.”

Any amount of time spent with Sheila E. is a reminder that high caliber musicianship is always first and goes down easier when presented with the joyous energy of an icon.

SET LIST

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have delivered a seismic blow to the West’s narrative of justice. These Sahel nations have officially withdrawn from the International Criminal Court, calling it nothing more than a neo-colonial weapon dressed up as law. For decades, the ICC targeted African leaders while turning a blind eye to Western crimes. This bold move exposes the hypocrisy of global justice and signals Africa’s refusal to be shackled any longer. The question now is—will more nations follow their lead? As the African Diaspora saying goes, "I am because we are, and we are because I am."

Lyrics:
From all the memories I’ve got inside my head
I get a little bit higher
Even though I know I’m not deserving it
I feel a little desire
Every time I open up and lose control
But now I’m out of one-liners
And still a little bit tired

When there’s a good thing coming
I turn around instead
I’m getting good at ignoring it

Is it too late to say that I’m lost on my own
It’s like all of its for not on a sinking stone
So I’ll tighten my grip on the last part of me
Is it too late to say I was always afraid
But not today

Remember late 2000’s
Empty bottles and a pencil in my hand
Maybe a part of me doubted
So I never said the things I should’ve said

It turns out that it’s a challenge
The balance
I’m probably thinking too much
About it
The sentiment was lost but
I found it along the way

When there’s a good thing coming
I drown it out instead
I can’t keep it from flooding in

Is it too late to say that I’m lost on my own
It’s like all of its for not on a sinking stone
So I’ll tighten my grip on the last part of me
Is it too late to say I was always afraid
But not today

When crashes come calling
Still I keep stalling
Who am I to say
I can’t take it all the way

Is it too late to say that I’m lost on my own
It’s like all of its for not on a sinking stone
So I’ll tighten my grip on the last part of me
Is it too late to say I was always afraid
But not today
No not today
