A unanimous 9–0 Supreme Court decision just changed how police use of force is judged during traffic stops — and if you legally carry a firearm, this ruling could be the difference between justice and a cover-up.

In Barnes v. Felix (2025), the Supreme Court rejected the dangerous “moment of threat” rule used by several federal circuits. Courts can no longer ignore what police officers did leading up to a shooting. Instead, judges must evaluate the totality of the circumstances, as required by the Fourth Amendment.
